Sheffield Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre is part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which is the second largest NHS Trust in England with an annual budget approaching £520 million. It is situated in the Northern General Hospital site.
Sheffield Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre started functioning as a specialist regional centre in 1999 and is a regionally and CF Trust accredited unit. Our unit was awarded the South Yorkshire Health and Social Care "Team of the Year" award in 2003 and was runners-up in 2002 in the Innovative Care class.
We treat patients over the age of 16 years, who live in Sheffield, and also, as far as Grimsby, Mablethorpe, Alfreton, Buxton, Lincoln and Wakefield. We have a close liaison with the Sheffield Children's Hospital Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Centre from whom we receive patients when they reach 16 years of age.
We have about 100 patients being treated in our unit and are growing at the rate of about 10 patients per year.
Our CF Centre is equipped with 3 separate treatment rooms, where we see patients and administer treatment. We have facilities for insertion of long lines, phlebotomy, spirometry and for starting patients on Home Intravenous Antibiotics.
We have 2 dedicated beds for our in-patients at Northern General Hospital (Brearley 1), with attached toilet/bathroom, television and refrigerator. We are hoping to have a bigger and dedicated in-patient ward for CF patients sometime in the future.
